Good Point of View
Welcome to Don Foley’s Good Point of View, a site about the town he lives in, Colonial Beach Virginia, and the Point, the section between the Potomac River and Monroe Bay, that he calls home.
This site is a place for Don to store his recipes, photos and adventures for his family and friends. And, of course, his companionship with his best friend, Chase The Dog.
A few years ago he began putting his adventures with food and travel on a popular social media site, and in the Fall of 2021 it all disappeared. Gone. Nada.
So with GPOV, he is going to re-create some of the lost info, and now has a place to park his new adventures without the concerns of a fickle social media overlord.
It also will be a place for him to explore the history of the Point, and by extension, the ‘Northern Neck’ region of Virginia, which has been key to this nation’s foundation.
Don and Chase live in “The Storybook House” on Monroe Bay. It’s a thing here that people name their houses, and this was the name of this…almost…100 year old farmhouse cottage by the bay.
Why Colonial Beach? Don now lives near both of his daughters. He has beaches AND snow. The town has embraced him. His boat is here. Of all the places he’s lived, Virginia was his favorite. Virginia has the ocean at Virginia Beach, The Chesapeake Bay, the Piedmont, fantastic rivers to canoe and to the west, mountains. But mostly, he is close to his Children. Everything else is a bonus.
The population is around 3,500…and there’s only one stoplight. Just the right size.
When describing Colonial Beach, he often says “It’s Key West with seasons.”
If anyone wonders why I write these posts about cooking my food, there’s three reasons.
One is that I only post recipes I like, or new things I’ve tried, and I want a place to store them.
The second is that I love cooking and I enjoy sharing these meals. I like the idea of my family (my girls in particular) and friends can share my culinary experiences.
The third is that I’m a former journalist with most of my life (40 years) in the publishing industry. I worked with various newspapers, news agencies and magazines. And this is journalism, in it’s own way. So I continue to journal. Old habits are hard to break.
This site is VERY MUCH a work in progress and only being shared with friends and family at this point.
